On August 2nd, SMCDFA welcomed Lisa M. Maguire, the Chief Defender, to introduce our members to the workings of the of the San Mateo County Private Defender Program. This program was a wonderful success - except we had many more questions than time! Ms. Maguire has served in the role since 2019, after serving as the Assistant Chief Defender from 2017 until 2019. She oversees more than 100 attorneys, 30 investigators, and 20 social workers who contract with the Private Defender Program to provide high quality representation to indigent clients. We are extremely pleased to welcome back Ms. Maguire, along with Ron Rayes, who leads the Juvenile Division, as we continue our exploration of the Private Defender Program.
The SMCDFA Social Justice Task Force has been involved in Juvenile Justice issues over the last several years. This is a particular interest of club members, who passed a resolution supporting improvements at the Youth Services Center. SMCDFA members also voted to support a resolution asking the SMC District Attorney to commit to trying children as juveniles, not adults. Ms. Maguire will provide a brief review of the Private Defender Program and Mr. Rayes will provide a brief description of the Juvenile Division's work. The majority of this meeting will be Question and Answer - so bring your questions to this meeting!
