Conversion Can Be A Solution to California’s Housing Crisis

The hottest topic in housing circles today is, Can we successfully convert empty commercial buildings into housing? This topic is our focus in November, featuring our speaker Ellen Morris from Eden Housing. 

Marin County received a Project Homekey award from the State of California to purchase the office building at 3301 Kerner Boulevard in San Rafael. Project Homekey is a State program using Federal CARES Act funding to purchase existing properties – intended in large part to target hotels, but it also allows for creative re-use of other property types, including office buildings as proposed for 3301 Kerner.

Eden Housing will convert a vacant office building into permanent supportive housing and provide services for households that are experiencing homelessness or have experienced homelessness in the past. 

Conveniently located directly across the street from the Marin Health and Wellness Campus, the 3301 Kerner project will feature modern amenities, communal spaces including an outdoor gardening area, offices for case managers and green initiatives that promote sustainability. The project will provide 41 units of permanent housing units, as well as supportive and mental health services. Residents will have nearby access to public transportation, shopping, medical services, recreation and employment opportunities.
