March 2025 SMCDFA Monthly Meeting

How_to_fight_the_coup_.jpg

We thought we had seen this movie before, but how many of us were ready for this movie?! SMCDFA's featured Speaker - Bruce Hahne comes close. It is clear he has given it much thought, and those of us who believe the only way to fight the depression we are experiencing is through action!

Bruce Hahne is a Sunnyvale resident and former tech employee who resigned from Google not too long before the company removed "you can make money without being evil" from its public code of ethics.

He currently serves on the board and as secretary of the Democratic Volunteer Center (DVC) in Santa Clara County. As part of his DVC efforts, he's currently producing a speaker series titled "Elevating Voices" which will feature talks by the Santa Clara County Rapid Response Network and the Trans Youth Emergency Project.

He's been an armchair follower of strategic nonviolence theory for several decades, maintains a web page of "Resources on resistance to autocracy and fascism" at http://bonhoffer.tv/resist, and most recently co-organized a pair of anti-Musk/anti-coup protests outside of the Sunnyvale and Palo Alto Tesla showrooms in mid-February.

Bruce will talk about how we can fight the coup – something we must do if we are to save our democracy. He maintains a growing, curated page of Resources on resistance to autocracy and fascism (https://sites.google.com/site/bonhoffertv/resist).

His presentation will focus on the widely-read Daniel Hunter essay (https://wagingnonviolence.org/2024/11/10-things-to-do-if-trump-wins/) and Indivisible's short-term strategy, detailed in a Nation article (https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/how-to-organize-our-way-out-of-the-trump-musk-putsch/).

These are two different approaches. Daniel Hunter writes as a strategic nonviolence expert and may view electoral politics as secondary or tertiary, while the founders of Indivisible are former Dem Party policy strategists and see electoral politics as everything.

You won't want to miss this excellent meeting.
