Tom Hayden’s name has been synonymous with activism for nearly 50 years. A co-founder of Students for a Democratic Society, he was a leader of student, civil rights, peace and environmental movements in the 1960s, taking a strong stand against the Vietnam War. As one of the Chicago 7, he was tried and acquitted following the 1968 Democratic Convention, after leading antiwar protests there.
Hayden later served a total of 18 years in both California’s Assembly and Senate. He has authored or edited 13 books, and currently publishes the Peace Exchange Bulletin, an online reader-supported journal.
Tom Hayden, leading peace activist, will speak about the “Long War” doctrine underlying the trillion-dollar wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Libya, and how this doctrine affects domestic priorities.
Hayden will discuss strategies to end the current wars and shift our resources to the environment and education by building a social movement that is politically effective, including pressuring Congress, countering military recruitment with education, and building coalitions for new budget priorities.
